Some places don’t just shape a community—they shape lives. For me, Union Bethel AME Church is one of those places.
In 2006, I first walked through the doors of this historic church when the iconic Reverend Charles T. Sembley was pastor. I had been raised in church my entire life, but there was something about this congregation—this spirit-filled space—that embraced me in a way I didn’t even know I needed. It’s where I met my husband, Garrett, and where I formed friendships that continue to anchor me today. When you walk into Union Bethel, you are family. That’s not just a saying—it’s a lived experience from the moment you enter.
Founded in 1826,
Union Bethel AME Church has stood as a pillar of faith, resilience, and service in the Randallstown community. For nearly two centuries, it has nurtured the spiritual growth of its congregation while championing justice, education, and care for others. Under Reverend Sembley’s leadership, the church became known for its heartfelt preaching, deep compassion, and commitment to uplifting its members. Even now, as Elder Sembley continues to inspire through his ministry, his legacy of love and leadership lives on.
Union Bethel didn’t just impact my spiritual life—it shaped my career as well. When I was starting my professional photography journey in 2014 (after making it my most expensive hobby in 2011), Union Bethel was the very first place to let me showcase my photography art to people in person. Standing in that space, sharing my work with people who had watched me grow, felt like both a blessing and a confirmation that I was on the right path. “We are a family” was not just a slogan we came up with while working at summer camp here, it was a true affirmation for this space.
Today, Reverend Raymond F. Edmonds, Jr. carries that mission forward
leading with a fresh vision rooted in the same unwavering values that have guided Union Bethel for generations. The church remains a safe haven where worship, community, and service intertwine, continuing to influence the Black family and the broader community in powerful ways.
When we were invited to photograph Union Bethel, it felt like coming full circle.
This was more than just a photography assignment—it was an honor to document a place that is deeply woven into my personal story. Our photojournalistic and editorial approach allowed us to capture not just the beauty of the sanctuary, but the heart of the ministry—the smiles, the embraces, the moments of worship, and the unity that fills the space.
For those who haven’t yet found this family of faith, here’s what to expect: warm welcomes, spirit-filled worship, and a church body committed to supporting one another in love. Whether you join for Sunday Service at 10:00 am or come for Communion Sunday on the first Sunday of the month, you will be greeted not as a visitor, but as family.
