Who says your wedding day has to follow tradition?
Priscilla and Dan certainly didn't think so! Their stunning royal blue wedding at Hotel Washington in Washington, DC, was filled with elegance, personality, and one of our favorite wedding day surprises.
And what we loved most? They designed their celebration around spending more time together and enjoying every moment with the people they love.
Wedding Portraits Before the Ceremony
Instead of following a traditional wedding timeline, Priscilla and Dan decided to take all of their wedding portraits before their guests arrived.
We explored some of Hotel Washington's most beautiful spaces, from its historic staircase to its uniquely renovated suites, creating a mix of timeless editorial portraits and candid moments.
And because we were just minutes from the Washington Monument, we couldn't resist a little adventure! We hopped into our Jeep, drove the newlyweds-to-be over to the monuments, and captured some beautiful Washington, DC wedding portraits before heading back to the hotel.
One of the things we love about being Black husband-and-wife DC wedding photographers is bringing both of our creative perspectives to every celebration. For this wedding, we blended natural light, off-camera flash, and on-camera flash to create photographs that felt both cinematic and authentic.
Our approach combines photojournalistic wedding photography with editorial posing, allowing us to document the genuine emotions of the day while creating beautifully composed portraits.
A Wedding Ceremony Nobody Saw Coming
After their portraits, Priscilla and Dan headed upstairs to enjoy cocktail hour with their guests.
Meanwhile, their reception space was ready for a royal celebration. Rich blue velvet drapery, lush white florals, elegant gold accents, and beautifully styled place settings transformed the room.
But the biggest surprise wasn't the decor.
Their guests thought they were already married!
As everyone found their assigned seats, Priscilla and Dan surprised them with an intimate wedding ceremony right there in the reception space.
It was such a beautiful moment watching their family and friends realize they were about to witness the couple exchange vows!
And immediately after their first kiss? They went straight into their first dance.
No long transitions. No waiting around. Just love, celebration, and an unforgettable evening.
A Rooftop Wedding Celebration in Washington, DC
From there, the party was officially underway!
Their reception was filled with laughter, dancing, and so much joy, including a lively conga line that made its way through the rooftop patio.
We absolutely loved how Priscilla and Dan made their wedding day their own. By completing their portraits early and surprising their guests with the ceremony, they created more opportunities to be present, celebrate together, and truly enjoy the experience.
And isn't that what a wedding day should be about?
Congratulations, Priscilla and Dan! Thank you for trusting us to document your beautiful royal blue wedding at Hotel Washington. Your celebration was such a wonderful reminder that the most memorable weddings are the ones that feel authentically you.
Love Deeply,
