There’s something unforgettable about a proposal.
Not because it has to be extravagant but because it marks the beginning of an entirely new chapter.
As husband and wife wedding photographers and videographers, Garrett and I have had the honor of documenting some incredibly thoughtful surprise proposals throughout Maryland and Baltimore County and one thing we’ve learned is this:
The most memorable proposals are the ones that feel intentional and authentic to the couple’s relationship.
Recently, we photographed a lakeside proposal where the groom-to-be incorporated poetry, a meaningful location, and one of the couple’s favorite traditions together. It was calm, emotional, and deeply personal—which made it absolutely perfect.
If you’re currently planning a proposal and wondering where to start, here are a few tips to help make the moment feel seamless, meaningful, and unforgettable.
1. Choose a Location That Means Something
The best proposal locations are often tied to memory and emotion.
Maybe it’s:
your favorite picnic spot,
the coffee shop where you first met,
a beautiful lake you visit together,
or even a cozy Airbnb that reflects your relationship.
Meaningful locations instantly make the moment feel more intimate and personal.
As Maryland proposal photographers, we always encourage couples to prioritize connection over spectacle. A place that feels emotionally significant will always photograph beautifully because the emotions attached to it are real.

2. Incorporate Something Personal Into the Proposal
One of the most powerful things you can do is include something unique to your relationship.
This could be:
reading a handwritten letter or poem,
recreating your first date,
playing a meaningful song,
incorporating favorite books or hobbies,
or planning the proposal around a tradition you already share together.
Personal details transform a proposal from simply “beautiful” into deeply unforgettable.
3. Think About Timing & Lighting
Lighting plays a huge role in both the atmosphere and your photos/video.
Some of our favorite proposal lighting happens:
during sunrise,
golden hour before sunset,
or on soft overcast days where the light feels calm and romantic.
Overcast days are especially underrated—they create soft skin tones, emotional moodiness, and beautiful reflections in water and landscapes.
4. Hire a Photographer & Videographer
This is the moment your lives change forever.
Having professional proposal photography and videography allows you to:
relive the emotions,
share the moment with loved ones,
and preserve reactions you may completely miss in real time.
Many couples tell us the proposal happened so quickly that they barely remember parts of it until they see the images and films afterward.
As a husband and wife photography and videography team, we’re able to quietly document the moment naturally while also helping guide logistics behind the scenes if needed.
5. Have a Small Plan Afterward
Once the proposal happens, emotions are usually running high—and that’s a beautiful thing.
We always recommend planning something small afterward such as:
a celebratory dinner,
champagne or dessert,
a portrait session nearby,
or even simply sitting together and soaking in the moment privately.
Some of the most emotional photographs happen after the proposal, when everything finally settles in.
6. Don’t Overthink It
This may be the most important tip of all.
Your proposal does not need to be perfect.
It just needs to feel true to you two.
The most meaningful proposals aren’t always the biggest or most elaborate. Often, they’re the quiet moments rooted in intentionality, vulnerability, and genuine love.
That’s what people remember.
