I had the absolute pleasure of being the resident photographer for the Association for African-American Museums 45th annual Conference held in the vibrant city of Nashville, Tennessee.
Each year, this esteemed organization orchestrates a remarkable gathering, lovingly coined as "Mini-Essence Fest" by their attendees, drawing professionals dedicated to the advancement of African-American Museums worldwide. It's an extraordinary opportunity not only to reconnect with peers but also to forge new connections and delve deep into the rich tapestry of the Association of African-American Museum’s (AAAM) history, which enriches not only museums but our entire global community.
As a photographer and a perpetual history student,
working alongside the Association for African-American Museums (AAAM) was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Immersing myself with over 600 professional historians over three days, capturing the very essence of their conference, was undeniably a highlight of my year.
Today, I'm thrilled to share a personal glimpse into my time in Nashville, particularly within the enchanting walls of the Frist Art Museum during one of the conference's evening receptions. With the recent release of Cowboy Carter weighing on my mind, I've felt compelled to share these images, as I begin to unravel the layers of themes presenting Beyoncé's latest work, feeling ever more inspired to delve deeper into its origins.
Having had the privilege to explore the rich history of country music and its profound influences from black artists and historians during my time in Nashville last year was an unparalleled honor and could not have happened at a better time.
My perspective underwent a transformation during the two weeks I spent in Tennessee last summer, and as I embark on further personal and historical explorations, I'm eager to uncover more about the roots of what we all to refer to as “Country”.
My heartfelt gratitude to AAAM for extending the Welcoming invitation. It's always an enlightening journey!
Love Deeply,
Megan Pitts
