There’s a lot of warm magic
that surrounds getting married in the winter months. It’s often overlooked because of the holidays and cool weather but there’s actually a lot of opportunity in getting married between Late November through March.
We’re going to share our top tips for throwing a Classy Winter Wedding while showing off some of Carrie and Joe’s Wedding Photos from last winter!
This is a great time to get together and get cozy
When planning your winter wedding, your venue is definitely a key aspect. Carrie and Joe chose Main Street Ballroom because it was convenient to get ready, have the ceremony and the reception all under one roof! Plus there was enough room for their guest to mingle and move freely around throughout cocktail hour and the reception. Their guests didn’t feel pressured to transfer from building to building in the cold winter elements.
First Look Before it gets Dark
Keep in mind that the sunsets early in the winter and if you’re planning on having an evening wedding you may want to do first look photos so you can have some natural light portraits done with just the two of you (or with family, you’re choice) We did a few with Carrie and Joe in the beginning of the day and some at night in the rain that are AWESOME…keep scrolling!!
Offer Something Warm
Whether it’s a hot cocktail, a winter classic (like hot chocolate) or some freshly baked cookies. I mean, who doesn’t love something to put them in the mood for winter at an evening soiree? Your guests will definitely appreciate this little detail and have them talking about it for years.
Winter Wedding Decor
For those who really know us, we got married married 2 weeks before Christmas almost 6 years ago! So we have a soft spot for winter weddings. One of the coolest things I found when decorating for my wedding is that a lot of venues already put up some wither decor to accent their venue. Whether it be garland, glowing trees or lights out in the front. This helps set the mood for your guests and also it gives you less things to decorate!
Winter Florals
If you’ve ever dreamed of a bouquet full of light and airy peonies on your wedding day, a winter wedding is not the best fit for you. It’s hard (and expensive) finding quality peonies in the winter but you can be daring like Carrie here and grab a bouquet that really showcases the season. Evergreens in your bouquet are more than just trendy during your wedding but have truly beautiful symbolism for your marriage. You can also get ballsy like our bride and add a King Protea into the mix!
Winter Wedding Favors
Here’s where you can really get creative… My husband and I spent months hand lettering and decorating Christmas ornaments for our guests to take home after the party. To this day, whenever someone goes to decorate their tree we get tagged on facebook of photos of our ornaments on our friends tree along with an Anniversary Congratulations. It’s great! We also made centerpieces that double as wreaths you can hang on your door. You can have a raffle on who at each table gets to keep the centerpiece (that’s a fun game to play before everyone leaves).
Tis the Season for Giving
This isn’t really a tip but a great idea for the holiday season. Ask your guests to be mindful and bring a gift to donate to children in need. It could be new or old toys or warm clothes or blankets for the inclement weather. It’s a selfless gesture that could mean the world to someone in need.
Did someone say Seasonal Discounts?
Some venues/vendors offer seasonal discounts for the winter because it’s usually a slow time of the year. (Some may also offer discounts on weekdays too)This isn’t the case with all venues'/vendors but it’s something to keep in mind when choosing your date and interviewing potential wedding pros.
