How to Get the Most Out of Your Engagement Session | Megapixels Media Photography

We’ve been sharing a lot of engagement sessions here lately

and well we wanted to share some info that would be helpful to you in case your planning to have your engagement session soon! We’ve been sharing college sweethearts on our blog this week so we’re going to keep that theme going by sharing Christina and Thomas’ engagement photos at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC.

Which leads us into our very first point in this blog…

Choose a Meaningful Location

Did you know that it is a Georgetown University tradition to go to watch the sunrise at the Lincoln memorial on the last day of school as a senior? Yes, some seniors even spend the night so they don’t miss any of it. This moment in this couple’s life meant so much to them that they decided to incorporate the monument in their engagement session.

Bring On the Natural Light!

When choosing your location, try to find a location that has access to natural light. This could be a place with large windows or a place with a balcony or patio. Most photographers are ready for anything and will bring their own lighting equipment but any photographer can tell you that nothing beats pure natural light. So don’t be shy! Pull up the blinds, pull back the curtains, and let that beautiful sun shine in! Or let’s plan something outdoors around golden hour. Don’t be afraid to ask your photographer for recommendations on the best time for lighting.

Dance with your Fiance

Remember that this session is for you guys. You should really be enjoying yourselves together. You dont even have to look at the camera, just enjoy being with your significant other (and your significant other). Which brings us to out next point…

Hire a Photographer who has experience in working with real-life couples

Not just models. We will give you prompts and exercises that will bring out your most authentic selves to be captured in photographic form.

Use Your Wedding Vendors for Your Engagement Photos

This is a great time to get your trial make-up and hair trial done. Also ask your other vendors if there’s any way that they could contribute to the shoot. Your florist and dress boutique would be great vendors to include. You can let them know that you would have some stunning photos to share with them that could be potentially published by a magazine or seen on TV.

Ask About a Video Highlight Reel

Not all photographers offer this option but we do!

Print Out your Engagement Photos to decorate your Wedding Venue

You can use your engagement photos to add a personal touch to your wedding day. They can be used as table decor, you can make them into a guestbook, You can frame them and hang on the walls at the venue or even get a canvas that your guests can write well wishes on. The options are endless!

Dress Smart

Style is important to us, but you feeling comfortable during your session is even more important! Please keep that in mind when your choosing your outfit(s) for your session. Make sure your that clothes are not too hot (cotton and linen are great options), that your undergarments are not too tight and that you have comfortable shoes. You can still bring those stillettos to shoot in but also have some back-ups in case times get tough ;) Feel free to wear your favorite summer outfit, for me (Megan) that would be long flowing Maxi Dresses. But for others that could be a flirty skirt and a cute blouse or for the guys, 3/4 button up shirts always look good. Also keep in mind that you want to wear colors that not only compliment your skin tone but each other. (Don’t worry, we’ll write a separate blog about that later).

Hydrate!

Drink plenty of water the week leading up to your session! If you drink at least 2 liters of water every day, your skin will be well hydrated and you may even feel a little bit perkier throughout your session.

Share our Photos with Others

As long as we can share our photography publicly and push our message that ALL couples deserve a high quality wedding photography experience (not just the models you see on the cover of magazines); then we can continue to do what we love while supporting our family. Photography with Megapixels Media is something that we’ve done since we were married and it’s something that we genuinely enjoy doing, not to mention it’s my full-time job now. So sharing photos of our clients is crucial to keep it all going. Of course we understand in some situations clients cannot have any of their photos shared which is why we will always offer a Non-disclosure agreement option with our packages. But in most cases, our clients don’t mind that we share the highlights of their day along with some tips to help inspire future couples.

We hope this blog was helpful to you! We’d love to hear your feedback in the comment section below!
